Non-Surgical Expansion with Midfacial Skeletal Expander (MSE) for Upper Airway Obstructive Patients
The primary aim of this presentation is to illustrate how the maxillary skeletal expander (MSE) has evolved from its birth, by examining the dental and skeletal effects of maxillary expansion when the conventional rapid palatal expander (RPE), the surgically-assisted rapid palatal expander (SARPE), and the micro-implant assisted MSE are used. Dental expansion, bone bending, and true skeletal expansion will be compared. The adverse clinical consequences of RPE and SARPE will be explored, and a new approach eliminating these problems by the use of MSE will be presented. Clinical cases involving non-surgical midfacial expansion in both adolescent and adult patients will be examined.
The secondary aim is to demonstrate other advantages of utilizing MSE. Clinical cases and research findings illustrating the enlargement of nasal airways after MSE in both adolescent and adult patients will be evaluated. Furthermore, improved breathing capacity after MSE expansion will be illustrated by dynamic airflow measurements and computational fluid dynamic simulations.
The latest findings from the UCLA research team will be presented in order to enhance depth of understanding in impact of MSE for improving the upper airway.

Dr. Won Moon is the Thomas R. Bales Endowed Chair in Orthodontics for the orthodontic residency program at UCLA School of Dentistry. He has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since 2002. He completed his dental education at Harvard and orthodontic education at UCLA. His work has been published in various journals, not necessarily limited to orthodontics because of his background, and he is a co-author of four textbooks. He has presented these findings in 37 countries, totaling over 450 presentations. His current focus has been establishing protocols for orthopedic corrections with MI, improving the airway for patients with nasal obstruction, and creating virtual patients utilizing image analysis and FEM.
His interest in mid-facial expansion began in 2004 as micro-implant became available in USA, and he is responsible for developing Maxillary Skeletal Expander (MSE), a unique micro-implant assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE). He has been active in advocating non-surgical skeletal expansion in both children and adult patients, especially for those who may suffer from airway restrictions.

benefits of canine substitution, these cases often have compromised esthetic results. This fun and fast-paced presentation will review steps to enhance the esthetics of the canine-lateral substitution patient.
We will review important topics such a bracket positioning, torque, elastics, finishing bends, cosmetic bonding, and retention. Be ready to take home a handful of clinical pearls to enhance your substitution
cases!

Dental Monitoring: The Missing Piece to Digital Orthodontic Workflow

The demand and availability for goods and services in non-traditional settings is growing. Orthodontic care is no exception. As orthodontists, we focus on successful results and the tolerability of our processes. While many of us have imagined an orthodontic practice where we do not actually have to see the patient, we are stymied on how to evaluate our patients’ progress. Now, you can triumph over your obstacles. The answer is not in the future, but is here now. Dental Monitoring can eliminate the barriers we fear. Just by having your patient scan their teeth and by using Dental Monitoring’s Artificial Intelligence, you can assess your patient’s orthodontic care. In fact, you will be able to access your patient more frequently and more thoroughly than you can in a conventional orthodontic setting. Dental Monitoring will also reduce stress, scheduling conflicts and practice inefficiency. All things that can silently reduce your profits.  And, that is power. So, why not treat yourself? You deserve it.
Hosted by Dental Monitoring
